Coelogyne crystata

Native to the eastern Himalayas, Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim and Assam, Coelogyne cristata grows as an epiphyte or lithophyte in montane forest between 1500 and 2600 m elevation. Its round, walnut-sized pseudobulbs bear two narrow, lance-shaped leaves 15 to 30 cm long. In late winter or very early spring it produces clusters of crystalline white, wavy flowers 7 to 10 cm across, the lip marked with yellow-orange crests, delicately fragrant. Cultivation calls for a cool, humid atmosphere while growing, bright filtered light, and a drier winter rest.
