Laelia autumnalis

Endemic to Mexico, Laelia autumnalis grows in the central and southern mountains of the country, between 1500 and 2600 m elevation, epiphytically on scrubby oaks or as a lithophyte on mossy rocks, in full light. Its ovoid, conical, ridged and furrowed pseudobulbs bear two to three leathery leaves. In autumn and winter it produces an erect 60–90 cm spike bearing several waxy, fragrant flowers 7.5 to 10 cm across, in variable shades of rose to purple, with a white-yellow lip veined purple. It requires cool to cold growing conditions, a pronounced winter rest, and bright light.
