Dendrobium moniliforme

Widespread in Japan, China, Korea and the Himalayas, Dendrobium moniliforme is a small epiphytic orchid with slender, cylindrical stems swollen in a bead-like pattern, reflecting its epithet moniliforme, meaning necklace-shaped. In spring it produces fragrant, short-lived flowers in white, pink or pale purple. Highly prized in Japan for centuries, notably under the name Chouseiran, it is traditionally grown mounted or in small pots, with bright light, good air movement, marked seasonal temperature variation, and a drier winter rest that encourages flowering.
