Laelia furfuracea

Endemic to the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, Laelia furfuracea grows epiphytically in oak and oak-pine forests in the mountains surrounding the central valleys, between 2100 and 3000 m elevation. Its elongated, cylindrical pseudobulbs bear thick, leathery, dark green linear leaves. From autumn into midwinter it produces a spike up to 30 cm long, bearing three to five fragrant flowers about 8 cm across, lavender to rose-pink in colour (a white form also exists). Traditionally used by Mixtec communities during Christmas festivities, it requires cool, bright growing conditions and a well-drained substrate.
