Cymbidium whiteae

Described by King and Pantling in 1898, Cymbidium whiteae is an epiphytic orchid native to Sikkim in the Himalayas, growing in evergreen forest between 1500 and 2000 m elevation. A small-growing species, it forms narrowly ovoid pseudobulbs bearing 12 to 14 arching, strap-shaped leaves. It flowers in autumn on an arching then pendant spike carrying 10 to 12 purple flowers about 3.5 cm across. A cool- to intermediate-growing orchid, it requires bright but filtered light, good atmospheric humidity, and a free-draining epiphyte mix, with temperatures ranging between about 11 and 27°C.
