Iris palaestina

Native to the Near East (Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria), Iris palaestina is a bulbous Iridaceae belonging to subgenus Scorpiris, the Juno irises. The ovoid bulb, with light brown tunics, bears the fleshy storage roots characteristic of the group. Narrow, strap-shaped leaves with an undulate white margin appear alongside the short flowering stem. This vigorous species flowers in April-May, producing fragrant greyish-green to yellowish-white flowers with short standards and broad, blue-veined falls. It requires well-drained soil, a sunny position, and a dry summer dormancy after flowering.
