Syringodea derustensis

Endemic to the Little Karoo in South Africa's Western Cape, Syringodea derustensis is a cormous Iridaceae known from only a few rocky sites between Oudtshoorn and De Rust, where it grows as part of the fynbos. A small plant 5 to 8 cm tall, it bears 3 to 5 spreading lance-shaped or oblong leaves. It flowers in May-June, producing violet to blue, occasionally white flowers with a long tube of 45-60 mm and a limb 30-40 mm across. Threatened by habitat loss from agriculture and development, it requires well-drained soil and a sunny position, with a dry summer dormancy.
