Iris histrio

Iris histrio belongs to the Reticulata section and grows wild in southern Turkey, Lebanon and Syria on stony ground. It is a geophyte with a single bulb wrapped in fibrous, netted tunics, producing one or two square-sectioned leaves that appear before flowering. From late winter, it opens blue flowers 5–8 cm across, with drooping falls finely spotted and streaked with deeper blue, marked by a narrow yellow ridge, shading to purplish blue toward the base. It requires well-drained soil, a sunny position and a dry summer dormancy typical of reticulate bulbous irises.
