Iris maracandica

Iris maracandica belongs to the Juno group and was described from the vicinity of Samarkand (ancient Maracanda) and Jizzakh in Uzbekistan, where it also grows in neighbouring Tajikistan. A small species rarely exceeding 15–18 cm, it forms a bulb about 2 cm across with fleshy, spindle-shaped roots, and silver-edged, sickle-shaped leaves. Between March and April it produces one to four strongly scented yellow flowers per stem. Like other Central Asian Juno irises, it requires well-drained soil, a sunny position, and a dry summer dormancy to flower reliably the following year.
