Iris kolpazkowskyana

Native to the Tian Shan Mountains of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, Iris kolpakowskiana (sometimes spelled kolpazkowskyana) is a small bulbous iris of the Reticulata group (subgenus Hermodactyloides), only 10 to 15 cm tall. Three to four narrow, channelled leaves accompany a single early-spring flower, pale lilac-blue with a broad reddish-purple blade on the falls and an orange-yellow ridge. It grows naturally on hillsides with sticky clay soil, wet in winter and dry in summer. In cultivation it requires well-drained soil, full sun, and a dry summer rest to flower reliably.
