Iris caucasica

Ranging from Turkey to north-western Iran through the Caucasus, Iris caucasica is a bulbous Juno iris growing on mountain slopes. Its neat, short grey-green leaves are edged with a fine white line. The stem, only 15 to 20 cm tall, bears up to four translucent, greenish-yellow flowers with a vivid yellow crest, faintly spotted with green, on the falls. Hardy and tolerant of summer dampness, it suits a sunny raised bed outdoors, or cultivation in a cold frame or alpine house.
