Iris filifolia

Native to southern Spain, Gibraltar, Tangier and Morocco, Iris filifolia is a bulbous iris of the subgenus Xiphium, its name referring to its thread-like leaves. Growing 25 to 45 cm tall, it forms a tuft of fine, almost thread-like leaves accompanying a stem bearing reddish-purple flowers in late spring to early summer. Like other Iberian bulbous irises, it favours light, well-drained soil and a sunny position, and dies back after flowering, entering a dry summer dormancy.
