Iris jordana

The name "Iris jordana" refers to a population now treated as a synonym of Iris atrofusca (the Judean or Gilead iris), found in the deserts of Israel, the Palestinian territories and Jordan, notably in the Gilead mountains. This rhizomatous iris of section Oncocyclus bears long, sickle-shaped leaves and a thick stem supporting a single fragrant flower about 8 cm across, in shades of purple-brown to blackish-brown, marked with a dark signal patch and a brown-black to yellow beard tipped with brown. It requires well-drained soil, full sun, and a strictly dry summer dormancy.
