Iris aurantiaca

The name "Iris aurantiaca" does not correspond to any recognised species; it most likely refers to Iris auranitica, which this description follows. Native to the Hauran-Druze Plateau in southern Syria, at around 1600 m altitude, this rhizomatous perennial of the Oncocyclus section bears fine, greyish-green, semi-evergreen foliage. In May it produces a fragrant flower, light yellow to mustard, with golden standards finely veined in purplish-red, falls spotted with purplish-red, and a bright yellow beard tipped with purple. It requires well-drained soil, a sunny position, and protection from excess winter moisture.
