Romulea hantamensis

Endemic to the summit plateau of the Hantamsberg Mountains in the Cape Province of South Africa, Romulea hantamensis grows on damp doleritic flats in a cold-desert climate comparable to parts of Iran. This cormous geophyte, 7 to 15 cm tall, bears arcuate or recurved cylindrical leaves. It produces a large flower, 60 to 75 mm long, bright magenta, each segment marked with a purplish-black blotch above a long white blotch bearing three dark lines, the outer segments striped with purple on the reverse. It requires well-drained soil, a sunny position, and a dry summer dormancy.
