Crocus biflorus

Widespread from south-eastern Europe (Italy, the Balkans, Ukraine) to south-western Asia (Turkey, the Caucasus, Iraq, Iran), Crocus biflorus is a small cormous geophyte about 6 cm tall, remarkably variable across its range — so much so that Brian Mathew distinguished fourteen subspecies. Its name, meaning "two-flowered," refers to the typical production of two flowers per corm. The flowers, white to lilac with a yellow throat, bear purple-blue stripes on the outer surface of the tepals. Flowering occurs mainly in spring, with some local autumn-flowering forms. It requires well-drained soil, full sun, and a dry summer dormancy.
