Crocus veneris

Endemic to Cyprus — the mythical birthplace of Aphrodite/Venus, whose name it bears — Crocus veneris is a cormous geophyte about 8 cm tall, growing in stony and grassy places as well as open pine forest on limestone. Its 3 to 4 narrow, dark green basal leaves are erect at first, later becoming arched. From mid-October into November it produces a star-shaped white flower with six nearly equal segments striped with violet externally, a yellow throat, three yellow stamens, and a six-branched orange or yellow style. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
