Crocus aleppicus

Native to the Near East, ranging from the Aleppo region of Syria to the Golan Heights and Upper Galilee, Crocus aleppicus is a cormous bulbous plant with a corm tunic of parallel fibres. It grows in stony ground and semi-desert Mediterranean scrub on basalt ridges, alongside other geophytes such as Narcissus serotinus and Colchicum stevenii. From late autumn into winter it bears small pale flowers with yellow anthers. It thrives in well-drained soil, in full sun, and withstands a dry season that can last up to eight months without rain.
