Crocus graveolens

Native to Lebanon, Syria, Palestine and Turkey, Crocus graveolens is a cormous bulbous plant with a parallel-fibred tunic, producing numerous narrow grey-green leaves. It grows at around 1000 metres in elevation, in stony fields, scrub and pine forest. In February and March it bears yellow flowers with a stigma finely divided into about a dozen threads, noted for a strong scent reminiscent of elderflower, detectable from several metres away on a sunny day. It thrives in well-drained soil, in full sun, and dies back during the summer drought.
