Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
Native to the eastern Aegean islands and to western and south-western Turkey, Crocus fleischeri is a bulbous plant with a small, teardrop-shaped corm covered in a silky, finely netted tunic. As early as January in mild conditions, it produces shiny white, star-shaped flowers with slender petals, topped by a bright orange branched stigma that overtops the anthers, dark orange-red when the flower opens and fading to cinnamon brown with age; the throat varies from yellow to orange, brown or even blackish. It thrives in well-drained soil, full sun, and good winter hardiness.
