Crocus cyprius

Endemic to the Troodos Mountains of Cyprus, Crocus cyprius is a perennial bulbous plant reaching 10 cm in height, with a flattened corm covered by a papery, ringed tunic. Its three to four erect, dark green leaves bear a distinct white midrib stripe. From January to April it produces small, cup-shaped flowers, 3 to 4 cm across, in light lilac delicately marked with darker staining, with a prominent deep-purple stigma. It grows in stony mountain soils and thrives in full sun, well-drained soil, and a dry summer rest period.
