Crocus baytopiorum

Native to Turkey, where it was discovered in 1973 by professors Turhan and Asuman Baytop, in whose honour it was named, Crocus baytopiorum is a bulbous plant with a flattened, egg-shaped corm covered by a thick, coarsely netted tunic. It grows on limestone screes, in rocky gullies and open pine and juniper woodland. In February it produces distinctive pale blue flowers, among the most sought-after of the Turkish spring-flowering crocuses. It thrives in well-drained, calcareous soil, in full sun, with a dry summer rest after flowering.
