Crocus etruscus

Endemic to central Tuscany in Italy, Crocus etruscus is a bulbous plant growing from a corm, around 8 cm tall, found in the understorey of oak and beech woodland, and occasionally chestnut groves. From February to April it produces lilac-blue flowers, with grey-blue outer surfaces marked by fine dark veining, topped by a three-branched orange-red stigma that generally overtops the anthers. It thrives in rich, well-drained soil, in full sun, and naturalizes readily in gardens where conditions suit it.
