Crocus malyi

Native to the Velebit mountains of south-western Croatia, Crocus malyi is a bulbous plant with a corm tunic of parallel fibres. Three to five narrow, dark green leaves emerge with the flowers in spring. These are long, white with a yellow throat, marked outside with a brownish blotch at the base of the segments, and a conspicuous bright orange style. It is found in grassland and pinewood up to 1000 metres in elevation. An easily grown species, it thrives in well-drained soil and full sun.
