Crocus serotinus

Native to the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa, Crocus serotinus is a bulbous plant growing from a corm, reaching up to 15 cm in height, whose long, slender green leaves appear only towards the end of flowering. As its name ('late-flowering') suggests, it blooms late in the season, from September to November, soon after the first autumn rains, producing lilac, pale purple or occasionally white flowers. It is found in lean pastures, mountain meadows, pine forest clearings and oak woodland edges, on dry, sometimes stony soils. It thrives in well-drained soil and full sun.
