Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
Native to the mountains of Central Asia, particularly Tajikistan and Afghanistan, Colchicum kesselringii — sometimes confused with the closely related C. regelii — is a small bulbous plant with an elongated corm 1 to 3 cm long, wrapped in a tough dark brown tunic. From late winter, alongside or before 2 to 7 linear leaves, it produces 1 to 4 small white flowers 5 to 7 cm tall, marked on the tube with a violet-purple dorsal stripe. It requires well-drained soil, full sun, cold winters, and dry summer dormancy.
