Iris vicaria

Native to Central Asia, particularly Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, Iris vicaria belongs to subgenus Scorpiris, the Juno irises. It is a bulbous plant with a spherical bulb bearing thin, fleshy vertical storage roots that are fragile and easily damaged when transplanted, producing arching leaves along the stem up to 30-40 cm tall. From April to May it bears 1 to 4 flowers in the leaf axils, white to very pale blue or amethyst-violet, with a yellow crest and blotch and darker veining. It thrives in well-drained soil, full sun, and a dry summer dormancy.
