Iris histroides

Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
Often misspelled 'histroides', Iris histrioides is native to the mountains of Asia Minor in Turkey, near Amasya, where it grows under pines at around 1500 m elevation. It is a bulbous iris of subgenus Hermodactyloides (the Reticulatas), its bulb covered in a brown fibrous network, with square-sectioned leaves that lengthen after flowering to 40-50 cm. It flowers very early, in late winter and early spring, before the leaves appear, bearing scented blue flowers of a deeper shade than the related I. histrio. It requires well-drained soil, full sun, and a dry summer dormancy.
