Amaryllis ? sp Madagascar

The exact origin of this plant, labelled 'Amaryllis sp. Madagascar', remains uncertain: in the strict sense the genus Amaryllis contains only one species, Amaryllis belladonna, native to South Africa, so a Madagascan 'Amaryllis' most likely reflects a trade name applied to a related genus, such as Crinum. In the absence of reliable identification, the following describes the genus: a bulbous perennial producing, in late summer, leafless stalks bearing an umbel of 6 to 12 fragrant, trumpet-shaped pink or white flowers, appearing after the foliage dies back. It thrives in well-drained soil, full sun, and a dry summer dormancy.
