Ammocharis coronarica

Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
The likely misspelling 'Ammocharis coronarica' probably refers to Ammocharis coranica, known as the Karoo lily, native to southern Africa from Angola to Zimbabwe and found in every province of South Africa. It is a bulbous plant with a large spherical bulb 15 to 20 cm across, bearing 9 to 15 broad, sickle-shaped leaves that spread flat on the ground. After summer rains it produces a dense, spherical umbel of about a dozen fragrant red to pink flowers, their scent intensifying at night to attract pollinating moths. It requires sandy soil, full sun, and tolerates drought while dormant.
