Colchicum bivonae

Native to the eastern Mediterranean — the Balkans, northwestern Turkey, southern Italy, Sicily and Sardinia — Colchicum bivonae is a cormous perennial to 15 cm tall, with narrowly ovate, semi-erect leaves appearing from March to June. In autumn, from September to October, it produces bowl-shaped, lightly fragrant flowers before its leaves, pinkish-purple and often paler at the centre, notable for their coarse, regular chequered veining, a feature that distinguishes it from other colchicums. It thrives in well-drained soil, in sun to light shade, and is best planted in late summer.
