Eranthis hyemalis — aconites

Native to calcareous woodlands in France, Italy and the Balkans, and now widely naturalised elsewhere in Europe, Eranthis hyemalis is a tuberous perennial no more than 10 cm tall. From as early as January-February, ahead of almost any other flower, it produces a solitary, bright yellow, cup-shaped flower about 3 cm across, surrounded by a collar of finely divided leafy bracts; the true, lobed basal leaves appear only after flowering. The foliage dies back by late spring. It thrives in humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil, in light shade to full sun, and naturalises readily in woodland settings.
