Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
Native to the southwestern Cape province of South Africa, particularly the Cape Point area, Gladiolus bonaspei is a cormous geophyte growing on sandy flats and slopes within fynbos vegetation. Its stems bear 2 to 7 orange, occasionally yellow, flowers, whose colour lightens slightly toward yellow-orange tones as blooming progresses. Long known under several synonyms, including Homoglossum merianellum, the species may eventually be reclassified as Gladiolus merianellus. It thrives in well-drained sandy soil and full sun, growing actively through winter and resting dry through the summer dormancy period.
