Gladiolus aureus

Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
Native to the Cape province of South Africa, Gladiolus aureus is a cormous geophyte now among the most critically endangered in the wild, with fewer than ten individuals known to remain. Reaching 40 to 60 cm in flower, it bears three linear, grey-green, ribbed leaves covered in fine down. In late winter and spring it produces strikingly golden-yellow flowers. Growth begins in autumn, flowering occurs through winter and spring, and the plant becomes dormant in summer. It requires well-drained soil and full sun, typical of the winter-growing geophytes of the Cape.
