Ixia frederickii

Native to the southwestern Cape province of South Africa, where it was known from only two localities, Ixia frederickii is a cormous geophyte belonging to section Ixia, closely related to Ixia maculata and Ixia dubia, with which some authors have in fact placed it in synonymy. In October it produces spikes of orange flowers on a slender stem rising from narrow, sword-shaped leaves. Like other Cape Ixia species, it grows in well-drained sandy or gravelly soil, in full sun, with active winter growth followed by a dry summer dormancy.
