Kniphofia ensifolia

Native to South Africa, Kniphofia ensifolia belongs to a genus of some 70 species. This deciduous perennial produces long, glaucous, sword-shaped leaves 0.5 to 1.2 m long with finely serrulate margins and keel, topped by a flowering stem reaching up to 1.8 m. In summer it bears dense, elongated spikes of tubular orange, red and yellow flowers, rich in nectar and attractive to nectar-feeding birds. It grows best in moist, well-drained soil and full sun in a temperate climate, and dies back in winter.
