Kniphofia nelsonii

Native to South Africa and also known under the synonym Kniphofia triangularis, this evergreen perennial forms a clump of thick, narrow, grass-like basal leaves. In late summer and early autumn it produces upright spikes of vivid tangerine-orange tubular flowers that are highly attractive to nectar-feeding birds. It reaches 60 to 90 cm in height with a spread of around 45 cm. It grows best in moist, fertile, well-drained soil in full sun, and tolerates moderate cold thanks to its evergreen foliage, which offers some protection against light frost.
