Endemic to the west coast of the Cape province in South Africa, where it survives in only two locations of the Vredenburg district on moist lower slopes, Lachenalia mathewsii is a small, deciduous, winter-growing bulb standing 10 to 20 cm tall. It bears two narrow, lance-shaped, fresh green leaves covered with a fine grey bloom. In the southern spring (September) it produces yellow flowers marked with green, with protruding anthers. Considered endangered, it requires well-drained soil, full sun, and a dry summer dormancy.
