Lachenalia orthopetala

Native to the southwestern Cape province of South Africa, where it grows, sometimes in very dense colonies, on seasonally waterlogged clay flats of the renosterveld that dry out in summer, Lachenalia orthopetala is a small bulbous geophyte 9 to 27 cm tall. Its narrow, lance-shaped, fleshy leaves have a deep central channel. It produces upright, bell-shaped white flowers marked with dark brown protuberances that contrast with a maroon peduncle. It requires soil that is moist in winter yet well-drained, and a sunny position.
