Native to California and Baja California, notably the Sierra Nevada, the Cascade Range and the Santa Monica Mountains, where it grows between 600 and 1,200 m elevation in chaparral and open oak woodland, Lilium humboldtii (the correct spelling of 'humbolti') is a bulbous perennial reaching up to 1.8 m in height. Its large, subrhizomatous bulb, with yellowish-white scales, sits deep in the soil. In June it bears a pyramidal inflorescence of orange flowers spotted with maroon, with orange-brown stamens. It requires well-drained soil, a partly shaded position, and some coolness at the roots in summer.
