Polianthes nelsonii

Native to northern Mexico, in the states of Durango and Zacatecas, Polianthes nelsonii is a herbaceous perennial with tuberous roots, growing from a short, erect rhizome bearing the scars of old leaves. Its linear-lanceolate leaves, 30 to 45 cm long, pale green, are marked with dark brown spots on the underside. It produces a loose to dense spike of fleshy, waxy flowers, white to pink, borne in pairs, recalling those of its close relative the tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa). Native to semi-arid habitats, it requires well-drained soil, full sun, and a dry dormant rest period.
