Satyrium odorum

Endemic to the southwestern Cape province of South Africa, where it grows in sheltered sandy soils between 30 and 800 m elevation, Satyrium odorum is a medium to large tuberous terrestrial orchid with 2 to 6 fleshy, ovate leaves. In the southern spring it produces an upright spike of up to 45 small, non-resupinate flowers, yellow-green and sometimes tinged with purple, their hooded lip extended into two slender spurs, and releasing a clove-and-lemon scent. Listed under CITES Appendix II, it requires well-drained soil and a dry summer dormancy.
