Scilla madeirensis (?natalensis)

This name most likely refers to Scilla madeirensis, endemic to Madeira and the Selvagens Islands, growing on volcanic rock and coastal cliffs — to be distinguished from Scilla natalensis, a South African species now reclassified as Merwilla plumbea. It forms a large, amethyst-purple bulb about 10 cm across, from which long, fleshy, pointed leaves emerge, often dotted with purple. In late autumn it produces a dense conical raceme some 15 cm long, packed with small, scented amethyst flowers, pollinated by endemic lizards. Rare and threatened in the wild, it requires well-drained soil, full sun, and frost protection.
