Sparaxis meterkampiae

Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
Native to rocky sandstone slopes of the Western and Northern Cape in South Africa, Sparaxis metelerkampiae (likely the correct spelling of 'meterkampiae') is a cormous geophyte 15 to 30 cm tall, with lanceolate leaves that are sometimes prostrate. From August to mid-September it produces unscented, zygomorphic flowers with a narrow, sharply bent tube, violet and marked with white, spade-shaped patches on the lower tepals. It differs from the closely related Sparaxis variegata in its smaller, predominantly violet flowers, pollinated by long-proboscid flies. It requires well-drained sandy soil and full sun, with active winter growth.
