Tigridia multiflora

Native to Mexico, occurring from Chihuahua and Nuevo León south to Oaxaca, Tigridia multiflora belongs to a genus of some thirty species growing from a tunicated bulb set 3 to 15 cm deep. Its lanceolate leaves, pleated fan-like, accompany a stem reaching 60 to 70 cm. As its name suggests, the species bears numerous ephemeral flowers, each lasting only a day but succeeding one another over several weeks; they show the genus's typical structure, three large coloured outer tepals framing three smaller, spotted inner tepals around a mottled centre cup. It requires well-drained soil, a sunny position, and a dry winter dormancy.
