Liatris spicata

Native to eastern North America, from Quebec and Ontario south to Florida and west to Wisconsin and Louisiana, Liatris spicata grows in moist prairies and calcareous bogs. It arises from a rounded, woody corm with shallow fibrous roots, sending up an unbranched, upright stem with narrow, grass-like leaves, reaching 60 to 120 cm. From midsummer to early autumn it bears dense spikes of fluffy magenta-purple flowers, attractive to butterflies and bees. It prefers moist, well-drained soil and a sunny position.
