Iris aitchisonii

Native to eastern Afghanistan, Pakistan and Kashmir, where it grows on moist grassy slopes at around 900 m elevation, Iris aitchisonii is a bulbous iris of the subgenus Scorpiris (the Juno irises). Its dark brown, papery-tunicked bulb, extended into a neck, bears long, fleshy roots. Three to six erect, linear leaves up to 40 cm long frame a stem reaching 36 cm. Between March and April it bears one to three flowers, 5 to 6 cm across, yellow, violet, or sometimes yellow and brown, with reflexed standards typical of the group. It is grown in deep pots or bulb frames, in sharply drained soil, with a dry summer dormancy.
