The exact species of this Moraea has not been reliably identified; this entry describes the general characters of the genus. Moraea is a large genus of Iridaceae with over 220 species, mostly native to sub-Saharan Africa, with greatest diversity in the winter-rainfall Western Cape, South Africa. These are corm-forming geophytes with hard tunics, renewed annually, mostly winter-growing and summer-dormant. The flowers, called 'peacock flowers' or 'butterfly irises', show bright colours with contrasting centres and last only two to three days. Cultivation requires free-draining sandy soil, full sun, and a dry summer.
