Lachenalia elegans suaveolens

Native to the south-western Cape Province of South Africa, Lachenalia elegans var. suaveolens is a bulbous variety of the family Asparagaceae (formerly Hyacinthaceae), distinguished, as its name indicates, by its sweet fragrance. Its basal leaves, sometimes spotted, accompany a spring flower spike of 15 to 45 cm bearing tubular, urn-shaped flowers in shades of blue to pink, marked with dark maroon and edged in white. Like other Lachenalia, it is a winter-growing southern African geophyte that rests dry through the austral summer. It requires gritty, well-drained soil, a sunny position, and moderate watering during growth, withheld entirely during dormancy.
