Gymnospermium albertii

Native to Central Asia (Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan), Gymnospermium albertii is a tuberous perennial of the Berberidaceae family, growing on rocky hillsides and snowmelt ground. Its tuber produces, from February, a stem around 15 cm tall bearing a deeply lobed leaf with five leaflets, bronze-tinged and rolled as it emerges before turning green. Flowering is brief, from February to April: a raceme, pendent at first then upright, carries numerous small bright yellow flowers with coppery red backs, up to 2.5 cm across. The plant dies back quickly after flowering and prefers well-drained soil in sun to part shade, with a dry summer dormancy.
